The 2018 Autumn Garden Expo on the 21st and 22nd of April will be the 21st Annual Autumn Garden Exp.

The Autumn Expo evolved from the original Wondai Lions Spring Garden Festival of 1993. Wondai Garden Expo has, like an unfolding bud, emerged to be the super event that it is now and in Spring this year will celebrate 25 years  of existence – what an achievement for a small rural district.

With  stallholders and visitors arriving from all reaches of southern  Queensland, the Wondai Autumn Garden Expo is an important regional destination rather than just an event, as people flock to the Wondai Sportsground to sample the diversity of the stalls displayed, enjoy the entertainment and guest speakers and catch up with family and friends.  The wholehearted involvement of Committee members,  volunteers and the Wondai community ensure that  a visit to this Expo as well as all of the interesting peripheral attractions will be a worthwhile experience.

The displays are many and varied, but Horticulture is the core business, and we are pleased with the number of specialist plant growers who are regular stallholders.  Being in a warm temperate zone, the sheer diversity of plants on offer which are suitable for our region is  one of the strong features of Wondai Garden Expo and stalls will come from as far afield as Rockhampton in the north and  Mullumbimbi in NSW

Stalls of particular interest will include beautifu Frangipanis, Pelargoniums, Ferns and foliage,  natural beauty preparations, Herbs, Succulents and Orchids.

Traders with allied gardening products, garden ornaments and household decorator items feature prominently and the sheer ingenuity and creativity displayed at all of these stalls is wonderful to see.

The Expo is well-served with a varied choice of food and refreshments from the various canteens and stalls and this includes Dinners on Friday and Saturday evenings which raise funds for local clubs.

The Horticulture and Photography Show are always delightful and entry is open and free to all with good prizemoney which is sponsored by the Wondai District Garden Club and Clegg’s Masonry of Wondai. Schedules  listing the classes for the Show are available from Wondai and Proston business houses, the VIC centre, libraries and Council offices.

The Display designed by members of the Wondai and District Garden Club is another  pavilion highlight, with a different them for each Expo.  Club members are also responsible for  the popular multi-draw raffle and some wonderful prizes have been sourced from stallholders at the previous Spring Garden Expo so be sure to get your tickets.

Special Guest Speaker at this Expo will be  Russell Young who is a very well-credientelled garden designer and plantsman and the first  sessions will be held  at 11 am and 1.30pm on Saturday On Sunday, Russell will hold workshops featuring garden design and planning so be sure to take advantage of the special two-day pass tickets and enjoy both days.  Speakers from other stalls will also feature on Sunday.

The Official Opening attended by representatives from the South Burnett Regional Council will be held at 1pm. on Saturday and there will be live music from Fabio Tolli.

Members of the South Burnet Orchid Society  are gearing up for their annual Show to be held at the RSL Hall on Saturday 21st  and will open to the public from 9-30am.  Not only will there be a fabulous display of these lovely plants, but there will be sales of all things of interest to orchid lovers including orchid plants and growing equipment.  Wondai Garden Expo thanks the Orchid Society for continuing to support this important weekend with the bus loads of gardeners who patronise both events.

The Wondai Regonal Art Gallery will open a special showing on the first Friday in April, with prizes which are sponsored by Wondai Garden Expo.  This is an Open Competition  for all artists in Australia, and Wondai Garden Expo is proud to be the major sponsor, with $1,000 in prizemoney available. Works with a floral theme dominate the showing  and  it is always well patronised and supported by local and visiting artists.  The showing is open for the month of April and always draws a very good number of visitors, as do the Wondai Heritage and Timber Museums.

These buildings on the main highway are highlights as you enter Wondai with their beautiful gardens and surrounding Rail Trail park

The Wondai Garden Expo Committee  acknowledges the support from South Burnett Regional Council in preparing for these events, and in return we have spent many thousands of dollars on  capital improvements and  maintaining the facilities on the Wondai Sportsground for the benefit of all users of the grounds.  Other major sponsors include Kingaroy Motorcycles, A-Z Web and Design, the South Burnett Times, Nanango Electoral Office and Colin Purnell, Earthlife products.

As well as giving opportunities to charitable organizations for fundraising via canteens and various stalls,  the Committee  makes donations to other groups which contribute to the running of Expo. There are still many areas which need attention and these are on the drawing board for future projects.

Entry to the Expo is only $5.00 per person per day, or you may like to take advantage of the two-day pass for $8.00. Children under 15 are free, and parking is also free with areas for disabled and wheelchair users set aside.  The grounds are wheelchair friendly with all areas easily accessible. Bus parking is also plentiful and free.
